It’s week 4 and all is relatively quiet on the New York Giants front. Due to the ridiculous scheduling of the NFL, the defending Super Bowl champs have a bye week after three weeks of play. Three weeks, three victories. The correct way to start a season. There’s still a lot of improvement to be made by this team, but there are obvious things to like as they’ll get ready for the rest of the season in two weeks. They’ve already shown glimpses of the dominant defense they displayed on the Super Bowl Run, with 13 sacks in the first three games, the secondary has been nearly stellar with the exception of the gaping hole currently at the third corner; I’m speaking of Kevin Dockery and the LBs have been solid too, with the exception of the rookie Brian Kehl who’s learning on the run but should develop into a good one by mid-season.

On offense, Eli looks sharp. He’s playing with a lot more confidence and already showing glimpses of the consistent play we saw from Week 17 on. The running game is strong. This is predicated on a very strong offensive line, consistently opening up holes for Jacobs and co. to run through. The weak link of the bunch, Derrick Ward, is looking like a #1. That should tell you a lot. The team’s best all around RB (Ahmad Bradshaw), and its home run hitter, is stuck on the bench because this coaching staff once again can’t seem to get its personnel right. Not something uncommon for Giants’ fans. At some point, a healthy dose of Jacobs and Bradshaw should be just what the doctor ordered and keep defenses honest thus opening up big plays in the passing game. The group of receivers are deep and talented. Burress has developed into a top 5 receiver; Toomer still manages to get it done and Steve Smith is blossoming into a heck of a receiver, already having developed great rapport with Eli. One to keep on, and another steal by Jerry Reese, is Domenik Hixon. He was drafted in the 4th round by Denver, its 2nd receiver from that draft (the other one is Brandon Marshall), but due to a numbers game, he was released early in ’07. Reese scooped him up off the waiver wire and we’re seeing him not only perform as a punt returner, but he’s developing into a very good receiver who should be here for a long time. Sinorice Moss should begin to look for new homes elsewhere because he won’t sniff the field going forward outside of Tue through Sat. As for coaching, this is still a very strong group, with the exception of Gilbride, and provided this team can stay healthy, they’ll be in it to the end to go for a repeat come February.
